My Analysis

edited and added to.With nearly 35% of eligible voters (approximately the same number as voted for the largest party) choosing not to vote the lack of faith in our politicians seems to be huge.I was disappointed by Labour and the Greens failling to fire up in the national media on education. The Governor General's car being stopped and many other issues that arose all fading to obscurity within the day from a lack of politicians getting in behind them effectively.Meanwhile tales of tea pots…See More

Asset sales for education

Selling assets to invest in education, nice spin? Sounds like the minister wants to close small and rural schools, sell their grounds, and consolidate them in new larger grounds with privately owned buildings. One size fits all production line style education and a chance to shake up and get rid of some uncooperative teachers at the same time. I guess he needs the cash to pay for the redundancies, and other expenses. Meanwhile  I expect parents will end up paying a lot more in, school fees, bus…See More

The early childhood education (ECE) task force report

Article  While some positives are discussed in the report I can see them only being used as smoke and mirrors, as excuses for the true National Party agenda. Based on estimates of $60 a week per child, I can see some services losing even more than under the 80% slash. What's more I imagine the paper war to get any funding that is held up, will be horrendous, adding yet…See More

Helen Kelly makes an excellent point

articleThe Working for Families changes impact on households with incomes as low as $35,000. Yes, it costs $2.8 billion a year, but it is in effect a tax cut aimed at those who need it most. Rolling back this tax cut but leaving in place the cuts last year which cost $5b, with 42 per cent of them accruing to the top 10 per cent of income earners, is…See More

A Whimpy approach to selling budgets.

Why is it when I look at the budget with it's promises of future benefits, it's glitizy rebranding of cuts to services and increases in costs, it's wealth redistribution, it's many reassurances of necessity and need, it's blame placing and crisis creation, it's asset selling and hidden surprises that the person John Keys reminds me of most is Benard Whimp. If IRD's rather than treasuries predictions are anything to go by then the small print conditions, the promised benefits anticipate to…See More

Used car saleman continues

Like the worst type of used car salesman, Keys continues, what appears to me to be, his plans for wealth redistribution from the poor to the wealthy (especially from those with children.) Changes to kiwi saver will effectively be a flat tax reversal, with the amount you get less likely to be a far greater propotional loss to those on the lowest incomes than on the highest, as he struggles to make up for his blow out on tax cuts for the rich and corporate bailouts. Like the tax cuts he promised…See More

Goff chokes

quote:Mr Goff told reporters a Labour government would not restore the cut in its first budget but it would be a priority."This is just one of a whole lot of examples of where Labour will have a real mess to clean up, so it will have to be done gradually but it will be done," he said./quote Well that's a real cop out, from Labour, I'm sure National too will eventually aspire to return to full funding, here's hoping for a real left wing party that puts education as a priority not a pipe dream. Nationals general policies

I was interested to hear my inlaws on talk about their views on some of National's more general policies. My father in law sees asset sales as another consumer tax, you sell your assets and you end up paying on every dollar you spend with that company. Unlike income taxes where your taxes go up as your income increases, or gst where the rate is fixed (assuming you don't claim personal spending back as a company expense, or spend overseas to avoid gst). Unlike those this consumer tax decreases as…See More

Time to start planning how if they won't join us to speak at our rallies (or if they do just refuse to listen) we make sure our voice is heard loud and clear at every rally and speech they give, next year.
